Let's talk about Finnish Design!

Finnish design has been around for decades, and it's a style that's known for its simplicity, functionality, and timeless beauty. Whether you're talking about furniture, textiles, or housewares, Finnish design is all about creating objects that are both aesthetically pleasing and practical.

One of the most famous examples of Finnish design is the Marimekko brand. Founded in 1951, Marimekko quickly became known for its bold, colorful prints and modern designs. Their signature Unikko print, featuring large, cheerful poppies, is still popular today and can be found on everything from bedding to clothing to kitchenware.

Another iconic Finnish design brand is Artek, founded in 1935 by architect Alvar Aalto and his wife Aino Aalto. Artek's furniture designs are characterized by their clean lines and organic shapes, often featuring natural materials like birch wood. One of their most famous designs is the Aalto stool, which has been in production since 1933 and is still popular today.

But Finnish design isn't just about big brands and famous designers. It's also about everyday objects that are beautiful and functional, like the iconic Iittala glassware. Founded in 1881, Iittala is known for its simple, elegant designs that are often inspired by nature. The Aalto vase, designed by Alvar Aalto in 1936, is one of their most famous designs and has become a symbol of Finnish design around the world.

One of the things that makes Finnish design so special is its connection to nature. Finland is a country with vast forests, lakes, and a long coastline, and this natural beauty has always been an inspiration to Finnish designers. Many Finnish design objects feature natural materials like wood, wool, and linen, and often incorporate natural motifs like leaves, flowers, and animals.

Finnish design is also known for its sustainability. Finnish designers have long been committed to creating objects that are built to last, using high-quality materials and timeless designs that won't go out of style. This commitment to sustainability extends to the production process as well, with many Finnish design companies prioritizing eco-friendly and ethical manufacturing practices.

One example of this is the Koti series of furniture by the Finnish company Made by Choice. The Koti series is made entirely from sustainable materials, including birch plywood and recycled plastic. The furniture is designed to be modular and adaptable, so it can be used in a variety of spaces and configurations.

Another Finnish design company that prioritizes sustainability is Finlayson. Founded in 1820, Finlayson is one of the oldest textile manufacturers in Finland and is known for its high-quality bedding and home textiles. In recent years, the company has made a commitment to sustainability, using only organic cotton in its products and partnering with organizations like the World Wildlife Fund to promote sustainable production practices.

But perhaps the most fun thing about Finnish design is the way it can be incorporated into everyday life. From a cozy wool blanket to a beautifully designed tea kettle, there's something for everyone in the world of Finnish design. And because so many Finnish design objects are both beautiful and functional, they can bring joy and comfort to even the most mundane activities.

So if you're looking to add some Finnish design to your life, start with something small, like a set of Iittala glasses or a Marimekko tote bag. Or if you're feeling adventurous, invest in a timeless piece of Finnish furniture, like an Artek chair or table. Whatever you choose, you can be sure that it will be both beautiful and practical, a perfect example of the timeless and sustainable beauty of Finnish design.
